ILRC's Red Cards Featured in The New York Times

On Sunday, Feb. 23, 2025, The New York Times published an article titled For Fearful Immigrants, It’s the Card They All Want Right Now. The article, published online and in the print edition, looked at the great demand for the ILRC’s Red Cards from across the nation and spoke of its importance to protecting immigrants. In a video that accompanied the article, the reporter, Miriam Jordan, said “this card could be the difference between staying in the United States or being deported.”

The ILRC introduced the Red Cards in 2007 after a spate of workplace raids fueled fear in immigrant communities. The cards, the size of a credit card, detail legal rights for immigrants if targeted by federal agents. The cards were a play on Red Cards used in soccer games by referees to eject players.

These cards and, crucially, the growing community of immigrants and allies helping to disseminate them widely, are doing important work fighting the cruel deportation machine seeking to expand under this administration. Since the election, the ILRCE has received orders for about 9 million cards, more orders than in the previous 17 years combined.
