Immigrant Legal Resource Center Condemns Biden Administration’s Proposed Changes to Asylum Rule That Would Fast Track Deportations

(Washington)—The Biden Administration’s willingness to change asylum rules that could result in the fast tracking of deportations for some asylum seekers would be cruel and inhumane. The Immigrant Legal Resource Center (ILRC) will continue to monitor these dangerous developments in asylum policy, ensure the field is educated on these proposals and vigorously advocate against them.

“The Biden Administration has forgotten that seeking asylum is a human right that is protected under U.S. and international law. The ILRC is disappointed, disheartened and extremely frustrated at how President Biden has shown his willingness to ignore the needs of asylum seekers,” said Policy Attorney & Strategist Elizabeth Taufa.  “This regulation will remove even more of the legal guardrails that protect asylum seekers.”

“The ILRC fully intends to advocate against these changes to the asylum rules, which would no doubt lead to the creation of even more barriers to apply for asylum that would be almost impossible to overcome,” continued Taufa. “The ILRC has continually called on both Congress and the administration to enact measures that would streamline the asylum process, and to provide more resources for community-based services to ensure immigrants are treated humanely and with compassion.”

“The Administration’s unwillingness to protect the right to seek asylum and make the process easier is unfathomable,” Taufa said. “We have been calling on the administration, to instead, rescind several harmful asylum rules in the books that would move us closer to a system that truly offers protection and safety to individuals fleeing persecution and due process for all asylum seekers.”
