Immigrant Legal Resource Center Decries Trump’s Extreme Immigration Agenda: Recycled and Repackaged for the State of the Union but Still the Same
Tonight, in Donald Trump’s first State of the Union address he once again advanced his extreme immigration agenda to hold the futures of immigrant youth hostage in exchange for racialized policies that would further militarize our border communities, undercut the migration of individuals and families of color and deny humanitarian protections for those in need.
Said Sameera Hafiz, senior policy strategist at the Immigrant Legal Resource Center (ILRC):
”Trump tried to repackage and recycle the same immigration agenda that has been widely rejected by most Americans at tonight’s State of the Union. He insists on denying humanitarian protections to individuals seeking safety and refuge, over-policing poor communities of color and using derogatory terms to denigrate families seeking to reunify and be together in exchange for Dream Act protections. Trump manufactured this crisis by rescinding the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program in September and throwing the lives of nearly 1 million young people and their families in to chaos. Rather than offering real solutions Trump doubled-down on the nativist playbook.”
