Hurting Immigrants is Prioritized Over Helping All Communities
(Washington)—The Continuing Resolution spending bill championed by the GOP-controlled House prioritizes billions on immigration enforcement aimed at fulfilling the Trump administration’s goal of mass deportation. The bill prioritizes harming immigrants at the expense of funding essential services that will benefit all communities.
The Immigrant Legal Resource Center (ILRC) condemns the passage of the continuing resolution in the House and urges all members of the Senate to soundly reject this spending bill.
“This bill, while claiming to be a “clean” bill that continues current funding levels actuality increases funding allocations for the Department of Homeland Security by adding nearly $10 billion for ICE, more than $10 billion for the Coast Guard, and more than $10 billion for the TSA, all to boost immigration enforcement efforts,” said ILRC Policy Attorney & Strategist Nithya Nathan-Pineau. “Meanwhile, nearly $138 million is being cut from services that would benefit immigrants, such as helping process visas and citizenship applications.”
“What this signals is the desire to fulfill the Trump administration’s mass deportation plan at all cost, no matter if it’s at the detriment of all communities,” Nathan-Pineau added. “Rather than focus on the needs of their constituents Congress has prioritized the hate-filled anti-immigrant agenda and fully embraced Trump’s dark quest to destroy our communities. Make no mistake, this bill will cause harm to all our country’s families on so many levels.”
